Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War should have an open-world campaign

It seems that Activision may indeed be leaning towards changing the way Call of Duty campaigns will work in the future. Although it’s still a rumor, it appears that Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War, the rumored 2024 CoD, is expected to feature an open-world story mode.

The information comes from Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, who has a significant reputation in the industry (especially with the Call of Duty franchise) and revealed that the series is set to begin shifting its narrative scope starting this year.

According to Henderson, the 2024 game, rumored to be called Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War, is expected to follow the trend we saw with Moder Warfare 3 in 2023 and depart from the traditional model of the series dating back to 2023. However, unlike the last title, the new game is said to have been conceived from the start of production with this campaign structure in mind.

Last year, Modern Warfare 3 received harsh criticism from both the media and fans for delivering a lower-quality story mode that repurposed and structures from multiplayer modes, especially Warzone, to construct its narrative.

In Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War, the idea is said to have been present since the beginning of production, introducing an open world with various missions to undertake on the map, incorporating the use of vehicles and fast travel points in a style closer to Far Cry, according to Insider Gaming. However, some missions would still maintain the traditional linear structure.

According to Tom Henderson, the campaign would be developed by Raven Software, known to Warzone, while the multiplayer and zombie mode would be handled by Treyarch. The insider says that this structure may even be repeated in upcoming titles, such as the 2025 CoD.

For now, all information about Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War are still rumors (including the game’s name), and there hasn’t been an official confirmation from Activision. As always, the 2024 CoD is expected to release between October and November of this year.
