Death Stranding: Kojima admits challenge in adapting game for a movie

Hideo Kojima explains that it would be easier to adapt Death Stranding into a series than a movie

Like other recent games, Death Stranding is being adapted into a film, and it has left fans eagerly anticipating updates. However, Hideo Kojima, the game’s designer and one of the movie’s producers, admits that making this adaptation is not an easy task.

In an interview published on the Kojima Productions channel, Hideo Kojima explains that it would be easier to adapt Death Stranding into a series format. One successful example mentioned by the designer to support this statement is the case of The Last of Us, wich made its debut in early 2023.

One of the reasons cited for the difficulties in adapting the game into a film is that in the video game, the campaign has a duration of approximately 50 to 60 hours, while movies typically have a maximum duration of two to three hours. This, of course, is likely to result is not all details of the game’s plot being appreciated on the big screen.

Despite mentioning these challenges, Hideo Kojima points out that many adaptations of video games into films have failed, but this has changed over the past four or five years with people who understand games being involved in the productions. In this case, one of the examples mentioned as a success story was the Super Mario Bros. The Movie.

For now, it’s worth noting that the adaptation of Death Stranding for the big screen still doesn’t have a defined release date, and even its cast has not been disclosed.
